Going toe to toe with the PS4 explains my hypothesis perfectly.  The normal home gamers are buying PS4, while the handheld gamers are buying Switch.  Both are selling well, because they are two different groups of people.

While there is a group that exclusively buys portables, that group is rather small. Sony themselves have said that many of the people the purchase Switch are Playstation 4 owners. The stationary systems and the portable systems compliment each other. Many of the people that bought GB/GBA/PSP/DS/Vita/3DS also had stationary systems. Now how appealing Switch will remain to both portable gamers and people that have stationary systems but also want a portable companion will depend on software output (both quality and quantity) and price. For software output going into 2018 it can really go both ways since we have very few clues as to what Nintendo is going to announce. The price though, IMO, is a bit too high for this level of momentum that the system has had thus far to continue (I believe a significant price cut may be necessary by next year to maintain momentum).

The argument that there is no overlap is akin to saying there are people that buy PCs and there people that buy smartphones but not both (which is obviously not true).

Now you are putting words into my mouth (referring to the bold).  There is a handheld market.  There is a home console market.  There is some overlap between them.  I would love to see hard data on the overlap, but to my knowledge there isn't any.  So you can't analyze things like home only or handheld only, unless there is data on that.

What you can do however is analyze the markets as separate markets, even if the customers overlap.  Because the handheld market data behaves one way, and the home console market data behaves another.  Right now Switch is selling very much like the handheld market does in it's first year: Very popular in Japan, while also somewhat popular in NA, Europe, and the rest of the world (in that order).
