Switch certainly will outsell Wii U. So, if that's the definition of failure, Switch will not be one. If it needs to sell as much as 3DS and WiiU combined, as some have said, then there is a reasonable chance that it will not meet that threshold.
I will say this though - It is easy for a system to sell well when it gets two of the highest reviewed games of all time as exclusives in a single year. It will be interesting to see how the system does when the big releases slow down. This is where third party support, or the lack thereof, could come into play.
