The unpolished cutscenes are a budget saving tactic that became popular so they could actually have a much larger volume of them without overbudgeting. It's likely not something they didn't know about, just something they didn't consider a priority.

The beginning is not as nearly as palatable as XCX. The Tutorial stuff is kind of annoying. Although, I think it is likely much more enjoyable for people who are not as familiar with RPGs or picking up mechanics on their own. I recall non-RPG reviewers docking XCX points because they felt too lost for a long time. Some complained that there was so much to do that they didn't know what to do, and didn't like that experience; personally, that's the sort of stuff I love. XC2 is definitely better for those types of people; and for others, I'd say it's an acceptable sacrifice for the purpose of accessibility. XC games are much more complex than Breath of the Wild, so the open-world low/no tutorial drop doesn't work as well for less experienced gamers.

I will say this, if you are a fan of games like Dwarf Fortress, and maybe even Minecraft, XC2s opening bits may feel a little torturous.

Overall, I still really like the game!
