To play some Devil's advocate, the only reason why people were even shocked about PS4's performance on this site is because it's a site of ultra hardcore gamers who are interested in hardware sales. They expected Xbox and Switch to take the day because they're the "trendy" devices. Yet as soon as the PS4 did well, people automatically thought that Sony and "everyone" underestimated demand, and that the PS4 was doing gangbusters. That conclusion was jumped to mostly due to the fact that it was unexpected for PS4 to do so well in the first place.
In reality, PS4 being out of stock could just be a sign that Sony did, for the most part, understand the demand, and that the demand was met. Just because a console is out of stock doesn't necessarily mean it did gangbusters, or that with stock it would sell way more than it already did. That can be the case, but it isn't always the case. I'm just suggesting that if the Xbox and Switch do end up selling more than the PS4, than the case could be that in an alternate universe where Sony keeps PS4 in stock this holiday, those consoles could have still outsold it. That's unlikely, but it will be especially true if the margin is greater than we thought(for example if the Xbox and Switch sold 300k more than PS4).
Personally, I'm conflicted, but other viewpoints are interesting. I don't know what to believe yet.
