Cross play doesn't require and Xbox live subscription though. For Minecraft it requires and Xbox live account but no sub and for other games like Rocket League you don't even need an Xbox live account.

You are missing the point. In every single thread on cross play the answer to the question is written hundreds of times and yet people still scratch their heads. It's an unbelievable psychological block, the likes of which I've never seen before. 'Why won't Sony allow crossplay? I want to play with my friends online and the only way I can do that is to buy a PS4.'  It's so obvious that it pains me to even have to explain.

It not like Microsoft wants PS4 players and Xbox players to have each other on friends list. They seam to only want the users to be able play in the same game to increase total population in games and decrease wait times. As long as I (Xbox user) couldn't add u(psn user) to my friends list or have a way to play with other than sheer luck I don't see how there is any actual advantage for Sony.

Having cross play without being able to join up with the other console users would still have huge benefits for everyone. It helps load times for us, it helps ecosystem for the devs. Allowing more players in 1 pool opening the possibility for more varied playlists. The negative effect for Sony would be marginal at best here. And arguing against cross play falls into blind allegiance in my mind. There's steps Sony and ms could take so it doesn't outright benefit Xbox and negitvly effect Sony.
