RAM usually goes up by a factor of 8-16 (2MB on PS1 to 32MB on PS2, 512MB on PS3, and 8GB on PS4). What he's saying isn't too crazy. It's a machine that has to run cutting edge games for 5+ years.
EDIT: On the topic of life expectations, I see the PS5 no earlier than 2020/2021. PS4 has this generation in the bag, no need to rush out a successor.
