If games can be bought physically, why can't they be rented in the same way?

I recently bought (very cheaply) gears of war 1-3 used from gamestop, and finished each in two sessions, playing with a friend locally. God damn would I be dreading having spent $60 on each if that were the case.

Having spent for example $6 in rentals for each would be perfectly fine. Sure, there is multiplayer, but meh. Lots of games don't offer $60 worth.

You could have gotten Gears 1-3 and over 100 other games for $9.99 with Xbox Game Pass.

Haha, that explains the funny prices I paid for each.

...1 euro for gears 1, 2 euros for gears 2... and I will let you guess the last one.

I am not too up-to-date on things pertaining to XBL/Microsoft.

edit: Having checked the conditions, it is not of much use to me - I am a X360 owner only
