I'm not saying the multiplayer held it back at all, it's how the multiplayer was used that held it back. I'm saying also that Square realized that the multiplayer held it back at least in portion, but from what one could gather from what was stated by the Director Toshiyuki Itahana the entire development of multiplayer would be miniscule compared to development of the single player.

I'm not Square though, so this error if they did make it is their own, I'm saying (again) that what held FFCC (GC) back was the hardware requirements to abuse the selling point (multiplayer) and not that the game was marketed (developed) towards children.
