The story might be real, but your reasons are bad.  Trump is all about image*, so he'd react to a false rumor almost as badly as a real one. 

*He just has very specific ideas about what image he wants to project.  He's fine with "proving" he has a good vocabulary by saying "I have the best words" as long as an audience is willing to cheer him on when he does it.  Why do you think he loves the campaign trail so much he never left it?  Shit, the actual job of the presidency is probably just a distraction to him. 

Honestly, trump reacts the way he does to things because hes out of touch in his age and never could quite get past his narssistic persona. Another issue is that he doesnt seem to project that he was ready for the job of presidency. That in itself is far harder than anything hes ever done.
