Bayonetta only got acquisitioned by Nintendo because the company literally wouldn't have been able ot make that game without Nintendo. From Software has the funds and money to do that tenfold. 

I've never given that story much credence. Bayonetta was a relatively popular game and Platinum are a fairly praised studio, there's no way Nintendo were the only hope to keep the franchise alive. They just gave a really good offer.
