You get some really neat looking, and efficient styles that way.

Having a separate portion of the site for mobile is too much hassle.

Making it responsive should be easy (viewport, media quiries etc), but from a UX standpoint it could be a pretty difficult task. Imo the site is not pleasant to use on desktop to begin with.
