Options. For games, some could use it. Heck, think of the Prime trilogy, didn't htat use IR pointer? Easier port, and ports of other Wii/Wii U games that used it.
I prefer in shooter games the dual/gyro aiming combo over IR. But I do wish I had the ir when say inputing my password or other functions.
More options are never a bad thing. And I doubt an IR addition woudl cost much. It's not new tech, they have used it before and are familiar with it.
Hell, I had assumed it had it, but learned the thing on top of the right joycon is instead some sort of other thing that I have never used. Like something that can read rock/paper/scissors or something. I woudl rather it be replaced with IR pointer.
