If failure rates were really, really really, that high, why wouldn't EB be threating MS with "make them more reliable, or we drop them" or something so overtly major, that MS would be forced to ensure the consoles were better?

EB are still making money high failure rate or not, it's still a small kick in the leg to Microsoft for EB's decision to double warranty costs.
