Well, yeah, you're right. I don't think it's neccissarily imperative for Sonic to run at 60fps, but it will always feel better and give you more room for reaction and more precise gameplay.
To me a stable 30 is actually preferrable to an uncapped 30-60fps range, but unless you're going to go full M2K and frame analyze a Sonic game, you're not going to gain much from the improved response time, because you're still not clairvoyant.
Who knows, maybe they'll prove me wrong and it will actually feel solid, but I doubt it makes much of a diffrence. Like you said, 30fps is still 30fps after all.
