I don't think the series is dead, considering that it must be really cheap to produce (the most expensive thing would be the songs, and even then they can say they are advertising them, so even that must be relatively cheap). A million for the Wii every year plus another million with the other platforms combined is a decent amount. Yeah no it doesn't work like that. Licensing is very expensive. You really think the music industry would give Ubisoft a discount on songs instead of cashing in on the most popular dancing game? Also developing 8 versions isn't cheap either.

Most versions only need some form of motion controll to work. The engine and control scheme is the same every year, with only the songs changing. They are pretty much using the same engine from the very beginning.
