I don't know if Nintendo offer teh same service in the USA but when my DS broke out of warranty (the hinges snapped) I contacted Nintendo and for £25 they sent me a new one.

yeah I called customer service and it costs $75 to fix it. I was like F-that, I'll just buy a DS lite. Problem is I never got around to buying a new one.
