Almost no one's going to change the OS themselves because it's too technical for the majority of people, but if Linux ever reaches a point where there's a decent number of computers that come with Linux instead of Windows, people are going to get it pretty happily. Most people don't care too much about which OS they're using, as long as it suits their needs. Of course reaching that point requires a lot of work.

I think that depends on how user friendly the interface becomes. If it's easy to use, it performs better and it's well supported, i wouldn't see a reason for people not to adopt it, especially if it's also cheaper. Of course, it's easier said than done. But it's not impossible. |
Many Linux distributions are already really easy to use, at least for daily use. As soon as you need to deviate from what's possible via GUI (and GUI is usually relatively limited), it gets too hard for the majority, and I'd say GUI offers enough options only for the most, er, basic users. I think the big issue right now is support though. As soon as Linux becomes better supported by software (e.g. games), it can grow, and with growth, devs will move too. As devs move, GUI issues start improving as well as there will be more devs available to work on them. But all this takes a lot of work, and I'm not seeing any of this happening any time soon. The situation has improved, but not quickly.

Nah, not necessarily true. If Linux ever gains mainstream adoption, those big companies will have no choice but to support Linux. If Linux doesn't gain that adoption though, you're right, and gaining that adoption seems pretty slow right now...
