Hence, you don't need a gun to commit a mass killing.

I challenge anyone to kill 50 people in a crowd with a knife. Heck even with a pistol that would be difficult. 

There's no reason why someone needs an assault rifle for protection. 

If I was going to even consider doing that... I would probably opt for something other than a knife.

Its not impossible to kill 50 people with pistols. Obviously you would have numerous magazines loaded. I hear the shooting went on for like 10 minutes. I'm not a gun expert, but I think I could shoot a few hundred shots in 10 minutes if I had a bunch of loaded magazines and maybe if there are a few pistols incase of jamming and what not.

Frankly, he was just shooting into a large crowd from above. I assume that made hitting people relatively easy.
