I have a theory that X1X is a high end 8th gen console right now ($499 at launch), but it has the potential to be a budget 9th gen console a few years from now($249-299 in 2019).

I think we can assume Sony is gonna aim for the magic price point of $399 and that limits the potential of hardware. I mean X1X is 4 year later, almost double the price of the X1S, so I'm not conivinced PS5 is going to be mega powerful in 2019.

Hence, MS may have the 9th gen advantage already if X1X is treated as 9th gen hardware because it may be able to handle virtually any PS5 game. Unless PS5 has a very powerful CPU, which is unlikely given consoles tend to push GPU.

That is a VERY good point. We can't dismiss the Pro though. That will also offer a cheaper option (and cheaper than the X1X) to bridge that financial gap.

The problem with the Pro is its pretty much just a PS4 with a more powerful GPU and a modest CPU upgrade.

The X1X is a more viable 9th gen contender given the even more powerful GPU, its CPU upgrade is more significant on paper, and the RAM avaiable to games is almost doubled.

Regardless, I don't think the PS4/Pro is dead when PS5 hits. As I suggested its still gonna share games with PS5, maybe Sony will really push crossplat support. To some developers the PS5 might be the PS4 Pro 2. But X1X has more potential as budget 9th gen hardware.
