The same just isnt true for the n64.

I'd say 2D spritework in general holds up alot better than a good chunk of 3D games during the PS1 / N64 era.  Castlevania SOTN for example still impresses, and Mischief Makers on N64 had a colorful 2D sprite style that still looks pretty good.
