Metroid sales used to be good in Japan until Retro started to work on the series. Anyway it is not fair to compare a remake to a brand new game. The only thing you can compare it to is Zero Mission (The other Metroid remake)
However finding Zero Mission's Japan sales is kinda of difficult apprently. The only place I could find show that LTD sales are around 60k. Wikipedia has it at 69K. However Zero Mission sold bad everywhere as it could not reach a million WW. I think Metroid 2 would be lucky to hit a million if it follows Zero Mission's path.
