The same reason the Wii was successful: An eye-catching gimmick. However, unlike the Wii's motion control, the ability to easily switch between handheld and home console with the same library and saves is something that's much more useful in the long term. This is the first time in a while that I've seen a console that has a real advantage over even my desktop.
