Honestly, I wish that all companies excercised this kind of restraint.  The world would be a much better place, IMO.

Nintendo is not your average big corporation, which is why they have such an insane amount of savings in the bank account and can afford to ride out bum generations like the Wii U without sacrificing their core principles.  By not over-extending and burning out their IP when times are good, Nintendo doesn't have to kill themselves and behave like Sega when the times are bad.  It's a very conservative philosophy that you don't see often nowadays, but when all is said and done look at how many times Nintendo has proven their doom predictors wrong.

If the Switch didn't pan out I think Nintendo would have had to finally buckle and compromise on their policies, but given that the Switch is looking to be a fairly solid console I wouldn't predict to be seeing Nintendo-controlled IP showing up on non-Nintendo platforms for at least the next 1.5 generations (other than maybe the occaisional mini-game style smart phone game).  Pokemon would be the first to go since it is super popular and not fully under Nintendo's control (which is why we got Pokemon GO last gen), but the Switch being a success now firmly pulls Pokemon back into Nintendo's sphere for the foreseeable future.
