It's missing. freaking. features.

If they gave enough of a shit they could have had the GAMEPLAY features here in full.  If that were the case, the engine switch wouldn't matter.  But since they want to imply that somehow the two are connected, since they use the switch as a limp, pathetic excuse for why they can't be assed to put in the same effort on Switch as the other current platforms, I'm not going to defend them.  Because not only is the exclusion of features lazy and cheap, the attempt to pass it off as tied to the freaking engine is just contemptuous.  This attitude is not something I am going to defend and not something any consumer should defend.

NBA 2k18 is a very good effort.  This is the usually EA "I guess we gotta put SOMETHING on the system, *sigh*" effort that they've put in time and time and time again.  That last noteworthy effort I can think of by EA on a Nintendo platform was Nead for Speed: Most Wanted in 2013.

No, it isn't garbage.  But since when did "not garbage" become the gold standard?

Are you referring to me with this line ?

And don't even compare the two different sports game series where one is more guilty of rehashing the engine (NBA) than the other (FIFA) ...

Sometimes content is tied to technical rather than logistic or creative reasons! The probable reason why journey mode was primarily designed around the Frostbite 3 in specific rather than the other engines is because ALL of the cutscenes are rendered at 30FPS on consoles with higher quality graphics to boot and more varied environments compared to the ingame graphics ... (Just how do you propose EA make the content work on the Switch ?)

I am referring to EA.  EA implied themselves that The Journey is only possible if Frostbite is used.  And that's just ridiculous.  They could have reconstructed those cutscenes in the new engine, it's not rocket science.  The two engines obviously have similar toolsets if they have their teams working on both and both are internal engines.

NBA 2K does not come without compromises, apparently they got (an obviously modified) actual engine running on Switch, but at a steep price it seems -- 30 fps instead of 60.

EA got FIFA at 60 fps while using a custom engine.

There are pros/cons here to either approach, I think honestly I would've preferred 60 fps for NBA2K with a custom engine.

EA has done good, I would kill for a NHL port on Switch as good as what soccer fans are getting with FIFA for Switch, a lot of others would probably say the same for Madden NFL.

With Switch it's not about having every damn feature. It's about being able to play reasonably "console type" sports sims on the road for the first time ever. That's the big deal here, PSP/Vita had some OK sports sims, but none of them really made you go "oh wow, this is pretty close to FIFA/Madden/NBA2K at home". Nor did it have the ability to pop off Joycons and play multi in a snap, that feature really actually favors sports games moreso than many other genres. Sports should be a big genre for the Switch unlike some of the previous Nintendo systems.

This isn't a zero sum game.  FIFA could have been feature complete with the new engine,  EA just didn't spend the money.  I'm not opposed to using custom engines, I'm apposed to cutting out features for now logical reason other than to save money and then USING the change in engine to try and explain that decision away rather than being honest with the audience.
