NK is calling Trumps empty bluffs here - sure the US might try/be able to kill off NKs government, but it will very certainly be replaced with sth similar and the move heavily endangers SK/JP, the allies you are "trying to protect" (I'm not sure you are, maybe all you are trying to protect here is your ego as the worldwide #1 bully)

only China has a realistic shot at taking over NK and gaining the support of the people to implement a lasting/stable peaceful government within a few decades, yet that pretty certainly wouldn't be a democracy

At this point it's only a matter of time before they actually do damage. Killing off NKs gov wouldnt work. And China is currently sitting on its hands and betting on NK not being balsy enough to actually nuke something. 

China taking over, I wouldn't mind as much. But as it stands NK is an unstable international threat that is dangerous whether or not the Kim's are in power or not
