The VR theory has been floating around for a while now, and with good reason. Not only did Nintendo essentially patent a means of turning the Switch into a VR device (without specifically naming the Switch itself), but it would also explain why they decided to put so much technology into the controllers that they really haven't been putting to use so far.

I'd almost be compelled to say that I'd expect them to release a VR headset and such for the Switch (utilizing the console itself as the screen), but there's just two major issues I'm not sure they can overcome...

Both have to do with preventing headaches/motion sickness as, from what I understand, you generally want both a higher resolution and an absurdly high fps (in the ~100 range). This is one of the limiting factors of VR at the moment, as I personally have the HTC Vive and, even coupled with an exceedingly decked out PC, it can really tax the hardware. This is why most VR games to date have been fairly simplistic in their looks; if the framerates aren't exceedingly high and absolutely locked in regards to consistency, you'll likely get sick.

That's the problem I see for the Switch... while I'm no expert, it seems to me that for a true VR experience they'd need to essentially sell a peripheral that exceeds the total cost of the system itself. They could certainly make use of the Switch for short-use VR like many of those simple headsets for smartphones, but I'm not sure they could go much beyond that.

Believe me though, I'd love if I turn out to be wrong. There's no company I'd rather see apply its creative juices to VR than Nintendo, as I suspect they'd churn out some amazing games and their art style is absolutely perfect for it as well.

I would have to agree with this. Unless Nintendo + Nvidia have some giant, superduper VR tech rabbit in their sleeves, it seems unlikely.
