Sony tends to make solid hardware (if not just a dumbed down PC), but they certainly are excellent at making a solid console hub for navigating to your games, communicating with friends, playing with friends. They're good with brand and interface

HOWEVER I would argue that as far as Sony is concerned in the video game market at this point- that's exactly what they're good at, making a platform, and I'd argue they aren't particularly great these days as far as actually developing in house first party games

frankly Nintendo is the only one of the big 3 still focusing on lots of creative software. Even on big computer platforms like Steam- Valve has abandoned making games for the most part.

And this leads me to a concern- that a lot of these video game platform holders are simply focusing on ecosystems rather than the games themselves. In the long run I'm not sure that'll be a good thing. In the past the harsh and raw competition of platform holders to stay being the consumers pick seemed to force innovation and risk in terms of creating not just better interfaces/communities, but better GAMES themselves

I can't help but be concerned when Sony/Microsoft seem to be almost entirely focused on the business of selling subscriptions to online gaming and putting out a decent spec box, rather than bringing out new experiences themselves

sort of like the analogy of a produce store that started out by providing their own high quality local veggies, that at some point focuses solely on building more registers and making the shopping aisles nicer but now flies in their produce from halfway across the world

long story short: I think Playstation is a solid platform, but Sony's seeming comfort with ignoring development of a lot of first party games and soley leaning against a well conceived box with a good name is slightly concerning

and the same thing can be said about Microsoft and Xbox to a stronger degree. It works for now when the third parties are pushing lots of good software to the PS4, but say a few of the big publishers go under in a bit? I don't like the direction some of the platform holders are going in because in my opinion it's not pushing things forward much in terms of gaming experiences

I think the perfect comparison would be Nintendo with Breath of the Wild and Sony with Horizon: Zero Dawn- both great games obviously; but one is essentially a polished open world RPG with heavy limitations just like many that came before it (HZD), and the other is arguably groundbreaking in its willingness to take risks (BoTW with physics, go anywhere attitude)

when a company focuses more on the platform than the games it seems to kill creative exploration in terms of game development

maybe I'm being too harsh on Sony given they've never been super heavily involved in first party games compared with some others, but still

Sony FP has been a very real thing since the PS2 days and even before at times. Varied, quality games galore: Jak and Daxter, the Legend of Dragoon, Ratchet, Wipeout, Primal, Hot Shots Golf, God of War, the Getaway... you may not see it this way, and the third-party reliabilty for Sony is certainly heavier than Nintendo, but comparing PS4 and XBO fp is a moot point. One clearly dominates the other, not just "stronger degree".

OP should've been there from the beginning. PS4 is good, PS2 was 100x better in its prime.
