Because he's full of shit? I remember their unprecedented push for Windows gaming a few years back, it resulted in poor ports and a terrible virtual store that had no chance against the competition. I think they're starting to realize that their wishes to dominate the console space with the Xbox brand won't ever succeed, not only that; they have yet to make a dime on the whole project, one can imagine that over 15 years of bleeding cash for what is now a fairly weak position in this market segment would sour many MS board members' milk, as well as that of investors.
MS have shown growth in other sectors, pushing more for influence and marketshare in home consoles would likely only net them more losses. In addition to their monetary setbacks with the Xbox brand, their awesome developer support from the 7th gen has eroded a great deal.
In shirt; they seem to want to come home again, to PC, where they started and still have possibilities, the revival of the AoE franchise shows this intention pretty clearly, it's an old classic from the once famed Microsoft Game Studios and is an obvious gesture of friendship towards the loyal and grown up PC gamer, who also happen to spend the most on games and gaming. No other major developer is really gunning for PC with proper AAA productions right now, so the market is more open to being reclaimed than many might think.
