I think it would have been better to have Dany fly down on her own accord and surprise the viewer.

People on reddit were calculating how long it would have taken for Dany to get to them from when Gendry started running.  It was estimated that it would have taken him no less than 6hrs to make the run, another couple days to send the raven to Dragonstone, and then a day for Dany to fly back.  Almost 4 days they would have been waiting for her to arrive.  They dead horde would have killed them by that time, since the ice would have frozen again, or they would have just died from hypothermia, or the Night King could have just lobbed those spears at them and killed them that way.  And as anthoer person noted, the dead also wouldn't have cared about the water; they would have just piled up until they formed their own bridge to get to the little island. 

 

All in all, it was just a very poorly written scene.
