Many luxury vehicles already have this feature (Teslas, for example). They're not perfect, but they haven't been a problem yet and have saved several lives.

Sure, but the fraction of cars with this feature is currently tiny. I'm envisoning a scenario with a huge number of these vehicles on roads, and how pedestrians will co-exist. Don't underestimate human stupidity and a willingness to mess with new technology.

There's already plenty of documented cases of human drivers deliberately driving in front of tesla vehicles aware of the knowledge that they will have to emergency force break.

I think it will work well the more advanced AI becomes (20 years from now maybe) but, I can definitely imagine some teething pains.

Then you really enforce jaywalking penalties. ;)
