But its nonsensical. We are talking about Gamestop here, who have a big stake in the second hand market because they buy used games at low prices and sell them close to the RRP of new games and probably handle it similar when it comes to used consoles. They aren't going to hoard or destroy used consoles, they'll push them back into the market.

The margin they are going to have on Vitas with this trade-in deal is going to be lower than for any other console in this deal, but the logic here is to give people an incentive to upgrade to newer hardware which in turn moves these consumers into a bracket with higher margins. After all, recent console purchases are more likely to motivate consumers to make game and accessory purchases than consoles that have been bought years ago.

That is also true but it doesn't make my stated fact nonsense. In fact, it just expands it. I'm pretty sure Gamestop itself does not consider itself in the second hand market and it does its best to hide the fact that it sells second hand goods to its consumers.

But as you elaborated upon it still stands that the biggest benefit of buying used hardware is not the tiny margin, but the fact that it's not on the open market anymore.

You're joking, right?  Every time I go to Game Stop - even the good ones - I'm offered a used game as an alternative to the new copy I am trying to buy.  Used hardware is less of a big thing.

But the Rol is right, the bigger focus for Game Stop is honestly the same as publishers: sell hardware so that you can sell them software.  Software sales for the Vita in the west are...bad.  Really, really, really bad.  Game Stop would much rather the Vita hold outs switch their on the go gaming to the Nintendo Switch which is currently doing very well with good attach rates.  Companies don't want revenue.  They want *consistent* revenue.  Switch owners are more likely to bring that to Game Stop's doors than Vita owners.
