But does the FIFA fanbase necessarily buy Battlefield and Star Wars games and vice versa? I can't see how a FIFA game is good test case for other titles, especially considering how specific its fanbase is.

That's not necessarily relevant if the same people buy the same games. All EA is concerned about is whether or not the platform as a whole make porting games to the platform worthwhile. If a game as massive as FIFA doesn't sell well, then EA has little reason to suspect that other, less popular franchises will sell better. FIFA is easily EA's best shot at making good sales on the Switch.
