I understand that Arizona has consistently voted Republican in every election since 1952 with only one exception (1996) and was home to that (suspended) infamous 2010 law allowing the state government to deport all "illegal immigrants" unilaterally on the basis of race, among other things, so I'm going to say that maybe your perception of your state's politics is a little skewed by how far to the right your own views are.
