I don't really think the sequel is mediocre at all. It's about the same level of innovation that comes with each new iteration of Mario Kart, and Smash Bros.

Wroooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnng. At least about Smash Brothers. At least Mario Kart doesn't come out every 2 years though. Besides, some of the Mario Kart gimmicks implemented in some of the sequels change things a LOT. I don't think the same could be said for Splatoon 2

What was innovated in the Smash series? Changing specials the way they did, adding two new bombs, and focusing the maps more on confrontation did make a huge impact on Splatoon 2.
