Wow...I was going to not comment on this thread anymore because I figure the whole point of it is to be the be all end all of Splatoon 2 "worthy-ness" discussion...... ya know like other people just put in their input and then leave the thread and then that's it ... but some of this just really hits a nerve

Not every entry in a said franchise needs to reinvent the wheel to be worthy of the sequel label. While I do believe that Splatoon 2 was a victim of the need of a good first year software output, from what reviewers said and players said, it seems like a clear improvement over basically everything that the first one did.

For the point we are in time, both due to the failure of the Wii U and given the diversity of the other titles in the Switch, Splatoon 2 is more than fine as a sequel.

And no one said it needed to be...

If Splatoon 2 is a victim of first year lineup, then I don't know how you could say it's "more than fine". The best I could say about a sequel that was clearly rushed for a lineup is ... "it's fine". Besides, Splatoon 2's base game plays a lot like Splatoon after all it's updates, just with a bit of extra content. You kind of implied you hadn't played Splatoon 2 (or possibly 1 too) though so idk.

Is there that much of a diferent betwenn fine and more than fine?It seems that you are stressing over semantics.

As I stated, Im not saying that Splatoon 2 is the equivalent of BOTW to Zelda, but given that Splatoon is such a fresh concept, it plays wonderfully, even if its not my cup of tea(I have played the first one, so I know what Im saying), and the fact that this franchise wont become an annual franchise, or wont have a release once every two years(This happened for Splatoon 2 most likely due to the need of the Switch being a success and Splatoon 2 being the key to achieve that in Japan, or at least garantee that), I dont see a problem with a sequel that plays safe.Well, really safe in the case of Splatoon 2.

And given the new things it did receive, and the updates and new stuff it will eventually receive, I dont see it being much of an issue. As you said, its a mediocre(In my opinion, mediocre to good sequel), but given everything Nintendo has produced this year and will release, I cant really honestly complain that they want to play safe with one or two titles in order to get their new console off the ground.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.
