I actually enjoyed both Mario is Missing and the time machine one as a kid lol... of course, "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" was huge at the time and I was super into those sort of trivia games, and really I'd say about half of my game library (if not more) were educational games. It really was a golden age for fun educational games actually, though the two mario ones are definitely two of the lesser "educational games" of the era.
Also, back then you just had a lot more patience with games and would spend hours searching for things and getting farther often through trial and error... games that relied on that don't generally age very well even for we patient types :p
