They could do that but nintnedo wouldn't buy their ips. They are a proud company that focus on the market they are going after. Micorsoft doesn't have ips in Nintendos league and quite frankly they are aiming elsewhere when it comes to the type of audience for the games they are pushing out are different. Should nintnedo branch out? Yes. The problem is that the are not.

You know, I'm a huge Nintendo fan, but it definitely wouldn't hurt my feelings to see Halo and Forza on Switch.  As you commented, Nintendo doesn't branch out a lot.  All the new IPs like ARMS feel very "Nintendo".  More variety would be nice.

I think a deep team-up of any type (closer together than than "put your software on our hardware, please") would cause all types of trouble.  As others have commented, Microsoft tends to run studios in to the ground.  Nintendo also tends to slowly kill off it's non Japanese studios, I haven't heard anything about NST in ages (maybe they're still doing the Minis games? meh.) and Retro suddenly isn't responsible for Metroid Prime anymore...IMO, Retro's track record should have them running both Metroid and DK and maybe a brand-new IP, too.

Not to mention the myriad other problems, like the mismatch on hardware ideals, cultural differences between the companies, etc.

Playing Nintendo is like going to Disney Studio in a console. Microsoft doesnt output enough IP's to satisfy Nintnendo level game development. If Nintendo wanted a Halo, they could make one themselves or acquire a studio that would accomplish the style of game they would like. MIcrosoft bought Nintendos old second party and utterly destroyed the relevance of the brand. Either that or they could just build a powerful console that third party could put their games on. Take Sony for instance, Sony couldnt make their own Halo and realized they could not compete with most multiplayer first person shooters, so they stopped trying. Their brand is stronger than ever because they are just being themselves. People buy Nintendo products for fun, not for a simulation like Forza...and if they wanted it they could get their sim from third party.
