And im not seeing it. This issue was raised bac at E3 and died very quickly, and the conversation has only been restarted again now. Even with the ppl against the idea the issue hasnt really been that important. Maybe when the cross platform play for the other devices has actually been implemented it will be, but for now its just a vocal minority. And nohting proves otherwise.
I think its pretty unfair to just dismiss their previous efforts like that as if they somehow dont count.
Actualy I would say you are straight up wrong on that assumption. Everyone is looking at this as only MC and RL and not looking at the bigger picture. They say yes to this, they have no reason to say no to anyone else. 3rd party multiplatform games are big sellers,, especially MP ones.
CoD, Destiny, Battlefront, Far Cry ,GTA, RDR, FIFA.
These games not only represent huge MP gaemplay, these games also happen to have marketting deals with Sony. Not MS. That doesnt help MS at all. By pushing cross play MS is attempting to negate the fact that the PS4 is being increasingly seen as the de facto console to go for MP gaming. And part of what sustains that now is that ppl are already into the PS ecosystem and so consistently new players are joining their friends into that ecosystem.
With cross plaform play, that entire need to get a PS4 goes away. Just because PS4 has many exclusives etc doesnt mean that many ppl buy them. A large portio of ppl buy only like a couple games a year. There are ppl who buy only FIFA and CoD and nothing else each year. They are a big market too. To ppl like that, whats important is who they can play with.
The reality of this entire situation is that all 3 companies are making business decisions that only help themelves.
For MS it means you dont need to buy a PS4 to play with a large demographic and your friends for MP games.
For Sony its about the opposite and ensuring that all their hardwork and the marketting deals they have pay off in continuing their hardware dominance.
For Nintendo its about ensuring that 3rd party MP games can thrive on Swtch even if the Switch userbase is incredibly small for the game. Is a pretty important business move because they need to ensure asap that 3rd parties can thrive on the Switch in the MP realm, something their devices are not known for, and also becasue they need as many reasons as possible to make the move to a paid online system look viable.
Every decision being made here is a business decisions that aims to help each companies respective hardware first. The consumer benefits, or lack thereof, is secondary to this.
You are right on that Sony should support it. But you are very wrong if you think MS sees no benefit, and Sony no detriment, from this. Because that is exactly what is governing the decisions for and against supporting this cross platform play.
