I can't pretend to know what will come of this, but I'd imagine it's more likely to do with streaming services than anything else. I cant really see how buying a distributor would impact the production of new content.

Exactly. I guess some people don't undertand that funimation is an american distribution company that handles anime. It has nothing to do with the production of anime. I agree that sony probably did it for streaming and for when funimation's deal with universial on dvd distribution runs out, sony will take over that.
