Play lots of party mode, there are some good players there for you to hone your skills against before moving up to ranked battle. Also Grand Prix mode on level 4 or above offers a great challenge and is good for sharpening your skills. Lastly, accumulate as many coins as possible and spend them unlocking all the different types of Arms, you can then experiment with different load outs and choose what best suits your style.
