Home console game experiences were impossible on a handheld. With the advance of technology, they became possible. Gba couldn't handle a 3d Mario kart, ds couldn't smash Bros, and 3ds can't ps360. Since there is no difference between experiences a Nintendo home console can offer from a handheld, seems the merge is the natural way.
They just need the 2 forms. We'll see a mini switch eventually.
