Surely this was going to happen eventually, they left themselves open to it story wise. It was only a matter of time until they pull the trigger. I'm looking forward to it as hopefully the writers can now do some different things now they have some new tools to work with.
Also, they've already had a timelord regenerate into a different gender. 
There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'
