No one can make VR mainstream. This isn't Star Trek. The vast majority of people haven't, don't, and will not ever want to totally block off their surroundings. IMAX theaters have been around for how long, and they continue to do next to nothing compared to other types of theaters despite the massive push in recent years. There is a level of immersion that people simply don't want, except for the minority.
The 3ds bombed hard at the gate compared to the DS because it was so expensive due to the 3d that no one wanted. I was a first day buyer excited about it, and I used to defend the 3d a lot to people who thought it was stupid even at the time, yet did I use it hardly ever? No, nor did anyone else I knew. It was an expensive addon that no one wants and even if they wanted it, don't want that kind of price bump, just like VR. The 3ds started to sell well when it dropped the price from $250 to $170/180 (can't remember which) and had mario kart 7 came out (a game that is REALLY hard on the eyes to play in 3d, so I doubt many tried or wanted to due to the fast motion).
Apple and Nintendo's financials would be wise to stay away from VR.
