That the photographer or art director can say "ok I'm out" and put the director in a serious compromis. It depends, there are different types of director, some are tiranic, some are extremelly open.

No they don't, lol. That's not their job. If they did they simply would never get hired again and one of the millions of people who are waiting to take their spot step up.
