 I have worked in movies and you'd be surprised on how much protagonism the art director and the photography director can have in a project, specially when they have a reputation, sometimes the director just says simple guidelines and then "do your best", that's it.

I have as well, and at best they can make suggestions. The director can say that's a great idea and use it, or say no. But if he says no, he isn't going to take their suggestion, guess what happens?
