Expecting sales on the same level as Mario Kart and SSB would be nuts, but Sony certainly didn't intend their games to become failures.
Your second sentence doesn't make any sense. Both of them want the other one to be gone.

I doubt that they want the other gone, unless they're sure that it's not going to cause instability for themselves, which they may not be.
