I dont think 3DWorld is in the same league as the others (galaxy,64,sunshine). I hope its the last of its kinde they do. Also 2D and level based platforming, I think DKC beats mario. My hope is that they dont do another "classic level based one". I think it hurts Nintendo too much. N64, Wii, GC, Nintendo all had "true" 3D exploration collecthaton open-world ish 3D mario's. Wii U is the one time, they "broke" the cycle, and dispite selling well I think it hurt them console sales wise. People arnt looking at Mario for 2D classic platforming anymore, they expect nintendo to deliver something more. |
I think there's room for both experiences. Level based Mario games have always sold pretty well, as it catters an audience who's craving for more of that. Nintendo is pretty good in keeping those experiences fresh, I really loved NSMBU and 3DWorld level design, and the new gameplay mechanics implementations in both of them. I think that normally people think that those experiences are "more of the same", but they're not imho. It's a formula that works, and what's not broken, doesn't need any fix. Just some new ideas to keep the formula fresh.
I'm obviously not complaining about Odyssey existence. Despite thinking that the more open-world Mario experiences are weaker, they're still great games. And it's about time that they deliver more of that again with Odyssey. There's an audience for that. I'm surely hyped about it too. But I have my reservations with it, sadly. So, as I said, I'll probably not be very happy if they totally ditch level-based Mario experiences. They're probably my favourite games ever, so you can understand my frustration XD.
And Wii hasn't had any open-world ish 3D Mario as long as I'm concerned. Galaxy games are totally level-based, and not in a different league as 3DWorld.
