It never ceases to amaze me how vital the results of a virtual competition are to real people.

Why the need to specify "virtual"? You know, there actually isn't any difference between virtual or non-virtual competition. It's people competing against each other to be the winner, it's all the same. There is nothing less relevant about a competition just because it is based on a videogame rather than any other kind of game.

A valid point would be stating how stupid it is that people get salty over mere online ranked matches, which are in most cases barely any more relevant than friendlies.

In video games, you are pretending to fight. In actual fighting, you really do... in fact... fight. There is a difference.
