There is a large difference before "use by" and "best before" dates on foods, a lot of people don't realize that.
Something which is marked as best before might change slightly by that date (sometimes to peoples liking) they're still perfectly fine to eat beyond that date though until you can use your own head to figure out that it is no longer good to eat.
I look at the dates as a guideline, if something is dated perfectly for a week... but it has been stored badly in either the storeroom, shop or your home then it could equally be bad, you should use your head and eyes to know what's good to eat, that's how we've been going for 12000 years.
