Mario 2D sells more if the system is already popular. NSMB Wii U didn't push hardware for the reason that 2D platformers aren't system sellers, especially on consoles and especially when the NSMB games are too similar to each other.
I think the reaction for Odyssey says it all, it's the most hyped Mario game since Mario Galaxy and possibly 64, and will undoubtedly be a system seller.
